Thornton Burgess Museum

The Thornton Burgess Museum is housed in the Deacon Eldred house on historic Shawme Pond. The Museum features a variety of memorabilia relating to the life and times of Thornton Burgess - the famed children’s author and native son of Sandwich, MA. Visitors can browse a variety of books, toys, games, and household goods that feature some of Burgess’ most famous characters including Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Jimmy Skunk. Currently on display is a red work quilt made by a 10 year old girl with Ruby Short McKim’s patterns based on the Burgess Bedtime Stories. The highlight of the museum exhibit is a display of several recently acquired Harrison Cady illustrations. Also housed in the museum are a gift shop, featuring Green Briar Jam Kitchen products, educational toys and games, storybooks, and Cape Cod goodies, plus the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center.

Outside the museum, visitors can stroll through the Tussie Mussie herb garden created by Barbara Soller and enjoy the beautiful views of Shawme Pond.

Burgess animal storytimes are conducted on a regular basis during the summer months.

WALKING TOURS OF SANDWICH VILLAGE Take a journey back in time to the summer of 1916 during the Walking Tours of Sandwich Village conducted on Thursdays, July 17, 31, August 7 and 28 and again on Saturday, September 20. The one mile walks begin at 10:30AM at the Thornton W. Burgess Museum, 4 Water Street (Route 130), Sandwich. Join author/naturalist Thornton Burgess, as portrayed by actor David B. Hobbs, on a tour of the village Burgess knew as a child. Hear stories of his life here in the 1870’s and 1880’s. See the buildings and sites where he lived, learned, worked and prayed. Advance registration is not necessary. The fee is $2 for Society members, $3 for non-members, $1 for children.
